Vestry Minutes September 13, 2012
Fr. Tom opened our meeting with prayer at 7:00 p.m. and Gene Scarborough read a devotion from Oswald Chambers “My Utmost for His Highest.” All vestry members were present as well as Treasurers JoAnn Riley and Barbara Spearin.
The minutes were approved as written on a motion made by Gene Scarborough and seconded by Chester Field. All approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Mike Sheedy, candidate for Vocational Deacon, was present to get the final approval for his ordination. He gave a brief update on his process for this, which is almost five years in the making. His ordination is set for December 1, 2012. Chester Field made the motion, seconded by Holly Kirby to approve Mike’s endorsement for Deacon. All approved
The Treasurer’s report, given by JoAnn Riley, noted that there was a negative amount in the Ministry Center’s account. She suggested that a motion be made by vestry for $1000.00 to be taken out of the funds made from the golf tournament to be put towards this negative amount. Gene Scarborough made a motion to take the 1000.00 from the golf tournament money and place it towards the deficit in the Ministry Budget and also that $500.00 be left in the account to handle administrative costs for next year’s golf tournament. This was seconded by Chester. Chester made a motion to accept the treasurers report as written, seconded by Holly Kirby and approved. JoAnn also stated that the Budget Committee, led by Connie Barnes had already met and begun work on next year’s budget.
Fr. Tom then brought up the Food Lion/Piggly Wiggly gift cards that are on sale from Mary Warner. Mary buys these cards and sells them increments of $25.00 and the church gets 6.5% of the total sales donated back to them. Fr. Tom encouraged all of us to get these and let our groceries give back to the church. Checks should be made out to Mary Warner.
A Parish House cellar clean out is planned for October 15, 2012. Bring your trucks and trailers for hauling off the junk! In addition to the Parish House,
the storage sheds at the Youth Center and the Rectory need to be cleaned out as well. Fr. Tom said a fall planting was planned for November 17th
and he was hoping that it would be more of a cleanup as well.
Property Utilization was next on the agenda. Connie Barnes made a suggestion that the Shimph House be cleaned up and made available for rent to a couple from our church in need of a home. Discussion ensued and it was agreed that this would be looked into further with a rental agreement. Next discussion ensued about the use of the Parish House and the low rent that is paid. A new roof is needed for that building, which is on the historical trail listing. Connie said she had met someone who writes grants and was willing to help write some grants for the Parish House roof. An estimate is being worked on right now for the roof repair at the church.
NEW BUSINESS
Robert said he would like to see the Ministry Center Budget be a part of the total budget and Jo Ann said that was in the process of being done. Robert then asked if the funds had been disbursed from the Golf Tournament to Hebron Grace Home and the Youth Center. He then made a motion, seconded by Gene, that $3,000.00 be given to Hebron Grace Home, $2,000.00 to New Hope and $2,000.00 be given to the Youth Center. All approved.
Discussion then ensued about services that are provided at the Youth Center, the Ministry Center, and the New Hope Center. There was further discussion about the possibility of the New Hope Center moving into the Youth Center and paying rent and providing weekly cleaning service. Robert will bring this idea to the Youth Advisory Board the next time they meet and it will be discussed. This will be tabled to next month’s vestry meeting.
Robert then said we should be thinking about the next vestry members to be voted on at the meeting in December. Fr. Tom said he has already started asking some people.
Holly thanked everyone who participated in the Eutawville festival; she stated it was very successful! She also said that she was very thankful for the job Terry Hendrickson was doing in working with the young people for Sunday school.
We then joined hands and prayed the Lord’s Prayer and adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Vicki Sheedy
