Vestry Minutes September 22,2011
The meeting of the Vestry of the Church of the Epiphany was called to order at 7:00pm with a quorum present, and John Vergere was absent.
Fr Tom opened with prayer followed by a short devotion by Chester Field.
Vicki Sheedy gave a brief talk about the training of the Daughters of the King going on now with the Church in Fort Mott, and their induction at our Sunday service on October 30, 2011. Those in training are Terry Dufresne, Debbie Vergere, and Rita Lupton.
On a motion by Bob Shingler and second by Bill Hall the minutes of the July vestry meeting were approved.
Joann Riley gave the Treasurer’s report and discussion followed concerning the Ministry Center as a separate line item in our budget. The need for a distinct Endowment committee was also discussed and it was agreed to appoint three members to this committee. Contract signing needs to take place before the end of the year. On motion by Gene Scarborough and second by Chester Field the report was accepted.
Fr Tom then introduced old business and the need for a Long Range Planning committee to review the mission statement of our Church, develop strategy and tactics to accomplish our goals. No one from the Vestry offered to lead this committee.
A change in the method of doing the prayers of the people was offered to the Vestry but they were not in favor of the change.
The new business section of the meeting began with the approval of a request from the Altar Guild for new purificators to be purchased with funds from the Memorial Fund.
Our need for another Teller, (counter) was discussed.
Fr Tom informed the Vestry that he had spoken with the Brotherhood of St Andrew to lead our Church in the Alpha program, and they are in the research phase currently.
Each Ministry listed on our website will be invited to offer a brief discussion of their work in our parish at the regularly scheduled Vestry meeting, and next up is the Brotherhood of St Andrew.
Stewardship Sunday will be October 30, and we will pass out our pledge cards at that time and also here a sermon on tithing. We will have our ingathering (collecting cards) the following Sunday during our main service.
It was suggested by Fr Tom that we institute a record keeping system for Memorials given to the Church that is available to the people of the parish for inspection.
Fr Tom noted that the Bishop’s visitation will be on January 1, 2012.
Mary Warner informed the Vestry that the Swamp Fox Boat Club was going to give the Youth Center $1500, and that she would pick up the check at their dinner on Monday the 26th. She also mentioned that the tutoring program would begin for this year next Tuesday the 27th and continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the school year.
Holly Kirby asked for another volunteer for the Sunday School program, as we had three children last week.
Gene Scarborough suggested that we either begin or end the Vestry meeting at the Altar in the Sanctuary, and use that as a symbol of leaving all our work as an offering to God.
The meeting ended with all joining hands and saying the Lord’s Prayer.
Meeting adjourned at 8pm.
Respectfully submitted,
