Vestry Meeting Minutes
January 12, 2012
We opened with prayer by Fr. Tom who did a devotion based on the collect from Sunday, January 8, 2012. He explained that collects change weekly and explained a little about them.
Bob Shingler made a motion, seconded by Chester Field, that the minutes be approved as written. All approved.
Treasurers Report was given by Joann Riley. Chester made a motion, seconded by Bob Shingler that the report be accepted as presented.
A vestry workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, from 10:00 - 12:00 and a budget explination will be included in that.
Fr. Tom talked to Cannon Jim Lewis concerning the By-laws we sent to the Diocesean Office for the Bishop's signature. Cannon Lewis mentioned there were several places in our By-Laws that referred to obeying the cannons and by laws of the Episcopal Church as well as reference to them having to be approved by the Bishop of South Carolina. Considering the state we are in with the national church, Cannon Lewis made recommendation that we remove the references to both. Bob will go through them and send them to the vestry members to look at. Changes will also be discussed at the vestry workshop and they will be voted on at the next meeting.
John Vergere checked on Constant Contact and he said it looks as if it could be layed out any way they wanted it to be. He and Fr. Tom will get together and begin work on it.
John Vergere also brought a picture of the sign that is currently being used at Epiphany church and a rendition of what a new sign made out of durable materials would look like. The church could obtain this sign for approximately $400.00. Junior Warden Chester Field will get with John about this.
Bob Shingler then read an email he had receive from the Diocese of South Carolina concerning a new church insurance program to be held on January 27, 2012. Bob, Chester, and Rita Lupton expressed interest in going.
Bob then stated the Youth Center is going to need some repairs to the back of the building. The Fishers of Men will provide the labor, but Epiphany is responsible for the money for the material. Joann said there is construction money available in the Youth Center's fund. Bob then said he plugged in a cord to the light that is outside the back of the building to light the area up and SCE&G has been contacted about putting in a security light that will be added on to the bill for the Youth Center.
Bob continued by saying a church work day would be held soon to clean under the Parish House. Some of the stuff belongs to Mike and Linda, (operators of the Parish House) and they will be present when this is held to identify what is theirs. A date will be set soon.
Fr. Tom then made a motion, seconded by Bob, that Fred Lupton, Keith Martin, and Larry Rice be appointed by the Vestry to form the Endowment Committee. All approved. Fr. Tom then explained to the new vestry members that an endowment committee had not been in place for several years and what the purpose of it is.
The current investments and the past financial state, including the lawsuit issues, were then discussed. The investment company, Physicians Insurance Capital LLC, (Ryan Riley) is asking that Epiphany Church contribute $4,000.00 to help defray the cost of the lawsuit they are involved in with to get monies back. The vestry voted no on putting any more money out.
Fr. Tom then asked Joann how the cash plate offerings were handled on the second and fourth Sundays. Joann said the 2nd Sunday cash offerings go to the Rector's Discretionary Fund and the fourth Sunday goes to the hospitality fund. Rita asked what the hospitality fund paid for and Joann explained.
Jerry Dufresne then asked that we try to keep the temperature in the Ministry Center set at a consistent temperature. A lock box will be looked into for the controls.
Fr. Tom closed the meeting with prayer at 8:15
Respectfully submitted,
Vicki Sheedy, Clerk
