Vestry Minutes February 9, 2012
The Vestry meeting of February 9, 2012 opened with Prayer by Fr. Tom at 7pm with all in attendance as well as our treasurer JoAnn Riley and assistant Barbara Spearin.
Connie Barnes brought a devotion entitled ‘Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’ that centered on forgiveness and living our life in the present.
JoAnn presented the treasurers report and stated that we are operating in the black and that the reports due to the Diocese and National Church will be in on time. Her report was unanimously accepted on motion by Chester and second by Robert.
The By-Law changes are awaiting a sample illustration from Canon Jim Lewis so we can compare our By-Laws to the standard. Fr Tom is in contact with our Canon.
Holly Kirby offered a report about Evangelism and stated that it is time to reach out and bear some fruit for the Kingdom. She recalled that years ago we did a Faith Alive weekend and perhaps we should do it again. The idea of doing Alpha also was talked about and much discussion followed.
John Vergere spoke about Constant Contact, our email system for getting information out to our constituents. Friday is the normal day for distribution and Fr Tom invited the Vestry to write devotions for inclusion in our weekly newsletter. It is called ‘News from Epiphany’ and is very much a work in progress and all suggestions are welcome. From this point we had discussions about the kind of letters we send out to visitors and other people who have a peripheral attachment to our church. Robert suggested some ideas as well as having some examples from other churches. Connie offered to help John with the technical side of getting our name out into the cyber space via Yahoo and Google and all help was welcomed. Also discussed was a presence at the opening of Eutawville’s new park.
Jerry asked about the new sign for the church and was referred to John and Chester for more information.
The Golf Outing will be held on June 23, 2012 at the Santee-Cooper Resort with a shotgun start at 9am. Janice Brady, Jerry Dufresne, and Jerry Thompson will be the leaders.
At a meeting with the Church Yard Com., Fr Tom suggested that the Church Yard com. cover all the property concerns as far as landscape goes and be responsible for all eight acres of grounds. He also suggested that the Endowment Com. of the Church be responsible for all Endowments of the Church with the Church Yard endowment being a restricted part of the total. This met with agreement as it is closer to how we actually do things than our by-laws suggest. In the future we will need to edit our Church Yard by-laws to reflect our practices. The Vestry agreed that this was a good move and that it made sense to them. No official vote or motion was made or taken.
Robert spoke about the need for a cleanup day at the Church Island Cemetery and the need for help from the Monck’s Corner chapter of the SCA, who have helped in the past. It is suggested to be either 3-17 or 3-24, and will depend on the SCA availability. Our annual service there is tentatively scheduled for April 21, 2012.
Robert then spoke about the need for repairs to the Parish House and JoAnn informed the Vestry that we have a designated fund to help defray expenses for repairs. The need for long range planning of funding was stressed, as we do not currently have the money available for the needed repairs.
The Vestry would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort that Ken Gosnell extended in repairing the fascia around the Ministry Center. He organized and acquired and installed all that was needed to protect our building from rain damage and his work is duly noted and extremely appreciated.
Rita spoke about Pastoral Care and her committee and I have attached her handout for reference. A lively discussion followed about the use of our properties for the general benefit of the community. And this tied in with the need for long range planning for our campus.
Our meeting closed at 8:05 pm with prayer by Fr Tom.
Respectfully submitted,
Fr Tom Hendrickson
