Vestry Minutes April 12, 2012
Fr. Tom opened our meeting with prayer at 7:00 p.m. and Chester Field read a devotion based on Psalm 73. All Vestry members were present for the meeting.
The minutes were approved as written on a motion made by Robert Shingler and seconded by Gene Scarborough.
Chuck Reynolds came to the meeting to discuss some security issues that we need to be aware of. One of them is to get a street address established for the church and posting it near all phones. Connie Barnes will work with Chuck on getting this project started.
The Treasurer's report, given by JoAnn Riley, was approved on a motion made by Chester Field and seconded by Jerry Thompson. JoAnn, Barbara and possible Robert Shingler will attend training for Treasurers on May 4th at St. Pauls in Summerville.
Old Business
A copy of the By-Laws were sent to everyone by Fr. Tom. It was decided to make one further change before final approval. A motion, made by Rita Lupton and seconded by Holly Kirby, was made to change that vestry meetings will be held monthly, with the exception of July and August, as approved by the Vestry and the Rector instead of setting a certain day it will be held. This way we would not be locked into a certain day and have to make changes if we wanted to change the day again. Fr. Tom will make this change and the final copy will be voted on next month.
Plans are going well for the Church Island Memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 21st. A box lunch will be made available for purchase from the Alpine Restaurant. Shuttles will be available to the island.
Jerry Dufresne reported that he and Janice Brady had a conversation concerning the Golf tournament, which will be held on June 23rd. Letters will be sent out this coming week to all past sponsors.
Robert Shingler said a date had not been set up for the clean- up to the Parish House as of yet. He and Chester will meet soon over there and see what can be gotten rid of. Discussion ensued.
Alpha - Gene will contact persons in the Brotherhood of St. Andrews, The Daughters of the King, and The ECW and see about getting some possible team members so we can look at the possibility of doing this program in the fall.
Jerry Dufresne made a motion, seconded by Rita, to see if John Vergere's son could still do the sign for the front of the Church, at the reduced price he had offered. If he can it was approved for the sign to be done and the old portable one removed.
New Business
Fr. Tom said that two of the members who were going to serve on the Endowment Committee no longer wish to serve on it. Larry Rice will serve in the roll of an advisor and Wanda Shingler and Carolyn Reynolds have said they were interested in being on this Committee. Holly made a motion to accept these two women as new committee members and it was seconded by Jerry Thompson; all approved.
Fr. Tom addressed the recommendations made by the Budget Committee. One of the issues was to establish a line item for Maintenance issues for all the buildings, which Robert had already addressed as something he would like to see happen. This would establish a budget so there was money available when repairs and maintenance needed to be done. Another recommendation was that books for Bible Study be purchased by the church for Bible study. Some discussion ensued. Another recommendation was to inform the congregation as to what the Restricted funds were and what they could be used for.
Fr. Tom then reported that South Carolina Bank and Trust gave Mary Warner 6 used computers to be used for the Youth Center. John Vergere is going to look at them and see if they are worth upgrading.
Fr. Tom then said that brought up the subject about whether or not we were using our resources in the best way we could. Discussion ensued about the Parish House and the Shimph House. Jerry Dufresne has some one who is interested in opening a coffee shop. There will be more discussion at a later date.
Fr. Tom then stated Cindy Field is wanting to stop working soon and some changes will need to be made in regards to the bulletin. Connie Barnes and Barbara Spearin said they were willing to help with the bulletin. More discussion ensued. Chester said he did not think this change with the working hours for Cindy were going to be immediate.
Fr. Tom then said he would be on vacation during next month's vestry meeting and suggested we discuss his first year's progress report since he would not be here.
We then joined hands and prayed the Lord's Prayer and adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
